The RiMEA work group "Congestion" has met for the last time in Frankfurt under our coordination in order to finalize our work concerning the new definition for significant congestions. During the revision of the current guideline version, it has become clear, that the old definition which was softened in RiMEA version 3 was not practicable. Identifying congestions by density is problematic, since simulation models represent densities very differently.
In the former definition, a threshold of 4 persons/m² was set. Following, models having a maximum density of 4 P/m² would never generate a significant congestion according to the definition, although congestions could be clearly identified by the user. Orderly cueing would also not have been detected, since people standing in a congestion would not generate high densities due to the orderly line which they would form. It was clear, that the old definition needed a revision.
The new definition identifies congestions through the reduced flow. If the walking speed of the agents significantly drops below their preferred walking speed, they will be walking in a congestion. For evaluation of the congestion, other parameters and conditions will have to be taken into account by the user, so the new definition is again a lot more relative and without hard physical conditions like the old one.
During the next RiMEA workshop in Vienna (date is still unknown), it will be adopted by the plenary and added to the revised guideline. In approximately one year, the new guideline will hopefully be released.
We are currently working on the revision of chapter 4, which will also be adopted during the next workshop.

For the 20th September 2019, the Fridays for Future movement has announced a world wide climate strike. Following, the Corporations for Fridays for Future initiative has called for companies to join the strike, which we gladly do.
Since TraffGo HTs formation, we try to run our company as ecologically as possible:
  1. Reducing the use of paper in our daily work has been fairly easy. In the old days, we sometimes used paper plans but nowadays, our customers deliver CAD drawings. We solely work on computers and our reports are rarely printed, mostly they are used in digital form.
  2. Our computer equipment is very efficient and thus uses only very little energy. This is mainly the result of our software PedGos main advantage: its efficiency. We do not need big workstations with multiple cores to quickly generate results. Even the mean calculations (500 runs) for really big projects are run on usual PCs and notebooks.
  3. The only climate sin with which we struggle are the travels of our employees. However, from an ecological viewpoint we are well prepared: Our vehicle fleet consists only of bicycles. :o) For longer travels, we take the train and usually take our folding bike with us to be flexible and mobile at our destination. Within Europe, we rarely take the airplane and prefer travels by train lasting several days. After all, thanks to notebooks, a long day in the train becomes a long day at the office. Even our Scandinavian customers can be reached by train and ferry.
    There even are years, during which we do not have to book even one flight and we are proud of this.

A very good database on response time distributions can be found in this paper of Lovreglioa, Kuligowskib, Gwynney and Boyce. They gathered 112 data sets of real evacuations and evacuation trials. Based on this data, correlations where analyzed and systematic groups were formed. You can find the paper here at ScienceDirect.

20th March 2019

The RiMEA association held its yearly meeting at the University for Applied Sciences in Munich. Among other things, the revision of chapter 3 (which is coordinated by us) was adopted. The next chapter to be revised is chapter 4. If you do not have access to the google documents and if you want to participate, please contact Tim Meyer-König.
Unfortunately, the association has not made progress regarding the definition of significant congestions. A work group was established which will propose a final definition during the next workshop in autumn.

Our workload in 2018 was extensive, so updating our homepage was neglected. We promise to improve this! However, a non-updated news site does not mean that we are gone, it means we are operating at full capacity. :o)
