If you always asked yourself, how a fundamental diagram emerges, we have made a little animation for you. The fundamental diagram shows, how a model represents the density and flow relation, e.g. how a congestion forms and how it dissolves. Thus, it's influence on the result is fundamental.

The user has no influence on the fundamental diagram in PedGo. It is generated automatically through self organization in the model. Since our agents occupie one or more cells, depending on their walking speed, congestions are automatically formed at bottlenecks and dissolve afterwards.

Our animation visualizes, how flow and density in the measurement area of a corridor (right side) develop over time. Because of the bottleneck at the right exit, a congestion occurs which slowly increases to the left. This is why the density rises, until the maximum is reached. At this moment, the congestion covers the complete measurement area so the density reaches it's maximum value. In parallel, the flow of the fundamental diagram (left) decreases.

At the end, the congestion dissolves, since no new agents enter the measurement area from the left. This means, that the congestion slowly disappears to the right, so while the density is reduced, the flow stays low.

We thank the organizers and participants of the EIPOS seminar Crowdsimulation for the invitation and their dedicated and friendly participation. We hope you were able to gather an overview over the topic and get an impression of the possibilities PedGo has to offer.

After the introduction, covering the guidelines surrounding crowd simulations and giving insight into the model development of PedGos basics, all participants grabbed the opportunity to work through three examples. It was very obvious, how fast everybody was learning to handle the software. By distributing the work, we were able to analyze several scenarios per example in order to assess the given questions.

We also would like to thank Dr. Karsten Loer (Sysacon) for his initiative and help to facilitate the seminar.

This year's annual meeting of the RiMEA e.V. (an association developing and maintaining a guideline for microscopic evacuation simulations) mainly dealt with adopting the revision of chapter 2 Definitions. Over the last year, Tim Meyer-König coordinated the chapters revision via a shared online document. While most points of discussion had been solved during the workshop in autumn 2017, the following definitions needed further discussions and had remained on the agenda.:

  2. Evacuation
  3. Individual Evacuation Time
  4. Person Distribution
  5. Significant Evacuation Time
  6. Significant Congestion
  7. Scenario
We once again would like to thank all participants for the very friendly and fruit full discussions. We were able to clear all points except for the definition of significant congestions. The question, which congestions have a significant influence on the result seems to be treated very differently, depending on the model used. This is why the next workshop will completely cover the topic congestions and how to identify the relevant ones. We are looking forward to see the contributions of other users and developers.

The participants of the BMBF funded research project SiME met at the University of Magdeburg. They presented their current results, mainly the data of the last practical evacuation trials and flow tests. It seems to show, that especially the evacuation of persons with impaired mobility shows almost no regularity. The evacuation process is highly dependent on individual abilities and their interaction with the circumstances (assistance, other evacuees, environment).

We conclude, that the current results support our approach of treating evacuations as a highly stochastic process and we are looking forward to the results PedGo will deliver, once the Assistance Model is implemented.
